Joseph N. Bolander is an associate attorney in the firm’s Civil Litigation Division, where he handles all types of employment discrimination and related matters in both state and federal court. In addition to zealously representing public safety and other employees in harassment, discrimination and retaliation cases against their employers from filing through trial, Joe has also achieved positive results for clients in actions brought under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)—including cases dealing with the calculation of the regular rate of pay and K-9 Handler overtime—and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Joe has a special place in his heart for those who fight for our country and K-9 handlers, and gets exceptionally excited when these cases come across his desk.
Joe enjoys handling writs of mandate challenging administrative discipline decisions, and he does appellate work for the firm, having recently argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Joe also has experience handling CalPERS and EDD (unemployment) appeals, as well as PORAC Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and California Correctional Supervisors’ Organization (CCSO) matters.
Joe received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from the University of La Verne with an emphasis in History. He later attended Chapman University School of Law where he graduated magna cum laude and finished ranked second in his class. While at Chapman School of Law, Joe was a member of the Chapman Law Review, and he earned CALI Awards for earning the highest grades in several courses, including Employment Law and Civil Procedure II. As a second-year law student, he completed an externship in the chambers of now-Presiding Justice Kathleen E. O’Leary of the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three, in Santa Ana. In his third year, Joe gained courtroom experience as a certified law clerk with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Joe has been with the law firm since its inception and is considered one of the “founders” of the firm. He is a client favorite, and his co-workers consider him to be one of the all-around best people you’d ever hope meet. You can reach him directly at Joe@CastilloHarper.com
